Peille

Visst är det vackert längs kusten här på Rivieran men kanske är det så att de allra charmigaste små orterna är de som ligger en bit upp i bergen. Det är så trevligt att utforska den ena efter den andra lilla byn och det är svårt att avgöra vilken som är favorit.

Vi har mycket kvar att upptäcka även om vi redan har skrivit om en hel del av dem – läs till exempel om Gorbio, Castellar, Sospel, St Jeannet, Pigna, Cabris, Seborga, Dolceacqua.

Nu vill jag gärna visa upp lite av Peille, en medeltida stad med drygt 2000 invånare ungefär 2 mil norr om Nice.

Peille är en av många så kallade ”villages perchés” som ligger uppflugna på en klippkant. Det gav väl säkert bra förutsättningar för att försvara sig mot inkräktare en gång i tiden. Nu gläds vi åt det vackra läget och de fantastiska vyerna från staden.

En gång i tiden var tydligen trakterna kring Peille boplats åt en ligurisk stam. Den bebyggelse som finns i staden idag härstammar till stor del från medeltiden. Bland de mer framträdande gamla byggnaderna finns ett tingshus och ätten Lascaris palats från 1300-talet samt en romansk kyrka med välbevarade fresker från 1100-talet.

Stora palats i all ära, det är nog ändå de smala gränderna med sina små uråldriga hus som charmerar mig allra mest. Titta på Centralgatan, rue Centrale, och tänk dig att det kanske var stadens pulsåder för några hundra år sedan. En annan liten trång gränd har fått namn av en gammal fransk president Félix Faure. Hans gator brukar i större städer vara stora breda boulevarder.

Peille är vackert både från håll och inne i byn. Det är härligt att traska runt längs gränderna och bara insupa atmosfären. Vi hade siktat in oss på lunch på någon av de större restaurangerna i staden men eftersom det var söndag och vi inte hade bokat bord fick vi inte plats. Snopet! Vi fick nöja oss med mat på creperie la Voute och det var faktiskt inte illa alls. Mysig atmosfär, trevlig personal och god mat.

Peille ligger för övrigt på en förkastningsspricka som sträcker sig mot Laghet och år 1999 drabbades staden av en mindre jordbävning.

När vi körde från Menton till Peille valde vi den vackra men krokiga smala vägen D22 från St Agnes men den är inget för åksjuka eller väldigt höjdrädda personer. Inte rak, men lite mindre krokig och smal är vägen D53 från La Turbie till Peille. Från Nice kör man till Peille längs D2204, D21 och D53. Sen går det förstås bussar från både Nice och La Turbie till Peille, också.

Peille är ett trevligt utflyktsmål och väl värt de krokiga vägarna dit.

We all appreciate the beautiful coast on Côte d’Azur, but perhaps the most charming places are located a bit up in the mountains. It is so nice to explore one small village after another and it is difficult to choose a favorite.

We still have a lot left to discover, even though we have already written about many of them – for example, read about Gorbio, Castellar, Sospel, St Jeannet, Pigna, Cabris, Seborga, Dolceacqua.

Now I would like to give credit to Peille, a medieval town with a little over 2000 inhabitants about 20 km north of Nice.

Peille is one of the many so-called ”villages perchés” which is perched on a cliff edge. This location was probably chosen so that the inhabitants could defend themselves against invaders. Nowadays we are pleased with the beautiful location and the stunning views from the city.

At one time, the areas around Peille were apparently settlement to a Ligurian tribe. The buildings that exist in the city today mostly come from the Middle Ages. Among the more prominent old buildings are a courthouse and the Lascaris palace from the 14^th century as well as a Romanesque church with well-preserved frescoes from the 12^th century.

Large palaces in all their glory, it is probably the narrow streets with their small ancestral houses that charm me most. Look at the Central Street, rue Centrale, and imagine that perhaps this was the city’s main artery a few hundred years ago. Another small narrow alley bears the name of the former French President Félix Faure. His streets in larger cities are usually big wide boulevards.

Peille is beautiful both from a distance and inside the village. It’s great to trudge along the lanes and just soak up the atmosphere. We had planned to have lunch at one of the larger restaurants in town but since it was Sunday, and we had not booked in advance, we got no table. What a shame! We had to content ourselves with food on creperie la Voute, and it was actually not bad at all. Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff and good food.

Peille is by the way situated on a fault line that extends towards Laghet and in 1999 the city was hit by a small earthquake.

Anyone who likes to hike may have Peille as the starting point for a tour to Cime de Baudon, read more in the excellent description available on site Randoxygenes.

When we drove from Menton to Peille, we took the beautiful but winding narrow road D22 from St Agnes. This is not advisable for those afraid of heights. Not straight, but a little less bumpy and narrow is the road D53 from La Turbie to Peille. From Nice you drive to Peille along D2204, D21 and D53. Then, of course, there are buses from both Nice and La Turbie to Peille, as well.

Peille is definitely a very nice destination and it is well worth the winding roads to get there.
