Gorbio är en liten bergsby knappt en mil från Menton. Man kan köra dit med bil, det tar cirka 20 minuter, men ett smidigt sätt att ta mig upp är med stadsbussen. Det är Zest busslinje 7 slingrar sig upp till toppen av berget där den lilla byn tronar. Har man ett busspass med 10 biljetter, som går att köpa vid buss stationen, så kostar enkel resa en euro! Bussen har flera avgångar per dag.

För tillfället avgår en buss från busstationen kring 12-slaget. Då är man uppe i Gorbio strax före klockan 13. Vad passar då bättre än en liten upptäcktsfärd innan man sätter sig tillrätta vid lunchbordet?

Det finns två restauranger vid det lilla torget, precis där bussen stannar. Oavsett vilken restaurang jag väljer så bokar jag alltid bord dagen innan och gå till restaurangen direkt när bussen stannat för att konfirmera bokningen. Det är ofta många bussresenärer som vill äta när de kommer fram. Har man då varit förutseende nog att ha reserverat ett terrassbord är det bra att få det bekräftat av servitören innan man går på sin lilla översikt-rundtur. Den stora rundturen sparar vi till efter lunch!

Under sommarsäsongen, fram till mitten av oktober, har den fantastiska restaurangen Beau Séjour öppet. De omnämns i Guide Michelin. Här äter man en fantastisk lunch på vita dukar. Man kan sitta inne i restaurangen med utsikt över dalen eller vid ett bord under pergolan som vetter mot det lilla torget.

Menyn är inte helt billig, men värd varje euro. Prova!

Detta är en familjerestaurang där man talar engelska. Detta är tredje generationen restauratörer. Sonen serverar tillsammans med sin kusin och Mamma och Pappa står i köket och skapar de vackraste och godaste rätter.

Efter servicen sätter sig gärna ”Le Chef” vid sitt piano och spelar så att digestiven lyfter till ytterligare en dimension!

Kanske sitter han och drömmer om när Céline Dion bodde hos dem för att spela in sin video ”Falling into you”, med Gorbio som bakgrund. Kyparen säger att hon var en ödmjuk person och han, som liten pojke, fick komma in i hennes loge.

Den här restaurangen är värd en omväg! Men notera att den har öppet till mitten av oktober och öppnar sedan åter fram på vårkanten.

Brasseriet Les Terrasses ligger mitt emot på torget och har öppet året runt. Det är också en trevlig restaurang med enkel rustik mat. Självklart går den inte att jämföra med Beau Séjour, vare sig det gäller menyn eller prisklassen. Här kan man både sitta inomhus och kura en kall vinterdag eller sitta och njuta av solen på terrassen som vetter mot det lilla torget.

Man även förfriska sig innan man tar bussen ner till Menton igen vid femtiden.

För att vara säker på att den lilla affären är öppen så kan man antingen ringa: 04 93 35 44 16 eller,

på familjärt sätt, ställa sig utanför affären och ropa.

Då kan det vara den äldsta medlemmen i familjen, en 95-årig dam som visar sig vid fönstret och ber att man väntar tills hon hinner komma ner, eller så kommer hennes dotter rusande.

Här finner man alla de tänkbara marmelader, oljor och diverse andra lokala produkter. Ett eldorado för den som behöver presenter eller julklappar. Försök att få låta era inköp stå kvar medan ni strosar runt i byn.

Jag trivs med att bara strosa runt och gå vilse bland gränderna. Det är ofta full aktivitet med fasadrenoveringar för Gorbios befolkning ökar. Snart räknar man 1.500 invånare.

På väg tillbaka till busshållplatsen vid femtiden kan man beundra den fantastiska, spektakulära almen som planterades år 1713. Vid almen ser man också skolan och förstår att det är en by som lever. Går man gatan upp till vänster om skolan kommer man till det kommunala tvättkaret. Här i Gorbio kan man drömma sig tillbaka till tidigare sekler innan man åker tillbaka till Mentons verklighet igen.

Gorbio is a small mountain village just under eight kilometers from Menton. You can drive there by car, it takes about 20 minutes, but a convenient way to get there is with the city bus. It’s Zest bus route 7 which winds up to the top of the mountain where the little village sits. At the moment a bus from the bus station leaves at about noon. Then you get up to Grobio just before 13 one. What better than a little walk before getting to the lunch table!

There are two restaurants in the small square, exactly where the bus stops. I always reserve a table the day before and notify the restaurant as soon as the bus stps to confirm the reservation. There are often many bus travelers who want to eat when they arrive. If you have pre-booked a terrace table, it is good to get it confirmed by the waiter before going on your little tour. The big tour is for after lunch!

During the summer season until the middle of October, the fantastic restaurant Beau Sejour is open. They are mentioned in the Michelin Guide. Here you will get a fabulous lunch at the white tablecloths. One can sit inside the restaurant with views of the valley or at a table under the pergola facing the small square.

The menu is not quite cheap, but worth every euro. Have a try!

This is a family restaurant where they speak English. They are the third generation of restaurateurs. The son serves with his cousin and Mom and Dad are standing in the kitchen and creates the most beautiful and the most delicious dishes.

After the service you might find ”Le Chef” at his piano playing so your digestif raises another dimension!

Perhaps he is dreaming of when Celine Dion was staying with them to record her music video ”Falling into You” with Gorbio as background. The waiter says she was a humble person and he, as a boy, had been let into her dressing room.

This restaurant is worth a detour! But note that it is open until mid-October and then open again until spring.

Brasserie Les Terrasses is located opposite the square and is open all year around. This is also a nice restaurant with simple rustic food. Obviously, it can not be compared with Beau Sejour, neither by it´s menu nor price range. You may both sit indoors on a cold winter day or enjoy the sun on the terrace facing the small square.

You can also get a refreshment before taking the bus down to Menton again at five o’clock.

It will probably be the oldest member of the family, a 95-year-old lady who shows up at the window and asking you wait until she can come down, or her daughter will come rushing.

In the shop you will find all the possible jams, oils and various other local products! A paradise for those who need gifts or Christmas presents. Try to get your purchase be taken care of while you stroll around the village.

I prefer just to wander around and get lost among the alleys. It is often full of activity with facade renovations as Gorbios population increases. Soon it will be estimated to 1,500 residents.

On the way back to the bus stop at about five o’clock you can admire the amazing, spectacular elm planted in 1713. On the other side of the elm one also sees the school and one understands that it is a village that lives. If you walk up the street to the left of the school you will get to the communal laundry tub. Here in Gorbio you can dream back to earlier centuries before going back to the Menton reality again.
