Menton – som det var förr / as it was before

När du strosar runt nere i centrala Menton, missa inte att titta in på den lilla utställningen om Mentons historiska arv.

På gågatan Rue St Michel, strax väster om Place aux Herbes och mitt emot Rue Sidi Brahim, ser du skylten ”Service du Patrimoine Ville de Menton”. Den leder dig in till en liten gård med en port in i en ståtlig gammal byggnad.

Här inne finns några rum med en sevärd utställning av modeller över hur Menton (och en del annat) såg ut förr i tiden. En trappa upp hittar du till exempel en modell från 1950-talet över gamla stan. På vägen upp passerar du det vackra hotell Astoria som det såg ut under sina glansdagar.

På entréplanet kan du begrunda hur bosättningar har utvecklats från förhistorisk tid till nutid. Det finns modeller av hyddor, borgar, hotell, stadsbebyggelse, casinot med mera. En av de senare byggnader som visas är Eileen Grey’s villa Tempe a Païa i Roquebrune-Cap-Martin från 1934.

Det är inte bara den lilla utställningen som är värd ett besök. Byggnaden i sig själv är imponerande. Den är sliten och gammal men magnifik med fantastisk rymd och vackra takmålningar. Jag vet inte vad den ursprungligen användes för, men det kanske någon läsare kan  mer om?

I anslutning till utställningen finns också en liten butik där man kan hitta många trevliga böcker om Mentons historia, om matkulturen, om trädgårdar och växtlighet och mycket mer. Dessutom kan man här köpa de små fina typiskt provencalska figurerna Santons (länk till ett tidigare inlägg).

Det är faktiskt en rogivande kontrast till myllret på turiststråket, att tillbringa en stund inne på det här lilla anspråkslösa muséet. Gratis inträde men ät upp glassen innan du går in.

When you stroll around in downtown Menton, do not miss to visit the small exhibition of Menton’s historical heritage.

On the pedestrian street Rue St. Michel, just west of Place aux Herbes and opposite Rue Sidi Brahim, you’ll see the sign ”Service du Patrimoine Ville de Menton”. It leads you into a small courtyard with a gate into a grand old building.

The exihibition is set in a few rooms with models of how Menton (and more) looked in the past. Upstairs you will, for example, find a model from the 1950s over the old town. On the way up you pass the beautiful Hotel Astoria as it looked in its heyday.

On the mezzanine level, you can learn how settlements have evolved from prehistoric times to the present. There are models of huts, castles, hotels, towns, casino and more. One of the later buildings shown is Eileen Grey’s villa Tempe a Païa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin from 1934.

It is not just the small exhibition that is worth a visit. The building in itself is impressive. It is worn and old but magnificent with stunning space and beautiful ceiling paintings. I do not know what it was originally used for, but maybe some readers know more about this?

The exhibition is also accompanied by a small shop where you can find many nice books on Menton’s history, of culinary culture, about gardens and plants and much more. Moreover, one can buy the charming typical Provencal small figurines Santons (see a previous post).

It is actually a soothing contrast to the noice and throng on the tourist trail, to spend some time inside this small, modest museum. Free entry but finish your ice cream before you enter.
