Castellar

Castellar är ännu en av alla mina favoriter bland små trevliga orter här på Rivieran. Den lilla byn syns nerifrån Menton och är charmigt uppflugen på ett bergstopp, en sk ”village perché”. Det är ett lättillgängligt utflyktsmål med buss, bil eller till fots.

Castellar ligger ungefär 6 km norr om Menton, har knappt tusen invånare och består av en vacker gammal stadskärna omgiven av trevliga villor åt alla håll med branta bergstoppar bakom sig.

Det är en ganska tyst och lugn liten by. Den består av några långa parallella gator med charmiga välhållna stenhus. Vid torget åt söder finns stadshuset och en liten bistro, La Tour. I andra änden av byn ligger kyrkan vid ett annat litet torg, och i närheten ytterligare en restaurang, Palais Larcaris. Där serveras en del goda lokala specialiteter och har du tur får du ett bord ute på deras veranda med vidunderlig utsikt över havet mot Italien.

Bagaren i Castellar är en lokal kändis och brödet säljs nere i Menton på marknaden vid Careï. En osttillverkare har sin lilla butik strax öster om stora torget. I norra kanten av byn finns ett stort hus för olivoljetillverkning bredvid ett slags monument bestående av en oljepress. Öppettiderna för att kunna köpa dessa olika delikatesser är dock ganska begränsade men om du besöker Castellar en torsdagsförmiddag kan du ha tur att hitta marknadsförsäljning på stora torget.

Som så många andra byar och små städer i trakten, har Castellar en lång historia. Den ursprungliga byn låg en bit norrut uppe vid foten av berget Ormea. Där finns fortfarande lämningar och husruiner kvar. Det lär finnas spår av bosättningar ända från neolitisk tid 12000 år före Kristus. Namnet Castellar omnämndes först på tolvhundratalet, då ett kastell anlades på vägen från Sospel mot Italien.

Namnet Lascaris stöter man på här och där. Tydligen har Castellar historiskt styrts av familjen Lascaris av Ventimiglia under långliga tider. Ett mer sentida minne finns norr om byn där en gata är uppkallad efter ”The First Special Service Force” som var det amerikanska förband som 1944 befriade Castellar från fascistisk ockupation.

Vi besöker ofta Castellar. Ibland tar vi den ca 1 timmes långa promenaden upp speciellt för att besöka byn. Ibland passerar vi Castellar på någon av alla längre vandringar i bergen ovanför Menton. Det är alltid trevligt att komma dit.

Castellar är en knutpunkt för många härliga bergsvandringar. GR52 mellan Menton och Genève går strax öster om byn, GR 51 ”Rivierans balkong” mellan Menton och Marseille passerar byn, stigarna från Sospel över Mont Razet likaså och om du vill bestiga Point de la Penna går du förbi Castellar på vägen från Menton. Det gör du också om du vandrar från Menton till Saint Agnes via Monti eller om du väljer att gå över Plan du Lion på vägen över Monte Carpano mot Italien. Många gånger passar vi på att stanna i Castellar för en lång lunch eller kanske bara ett kort uppfriskande vätskeintag.

Castellar is another one of all my favorites among the nice places to visit on Côte d’Azur. This small village is visible from Menton. It is charmingly perched on a cliff top, a so called ‘village perché’, and is easily accessible by bus, car or by foot.

Castellar is located about 6 km north of Menton, has barely a thousand inhabitants and consists of a pretty old town center surrounded by nice villas with steep mountains in the back.

It’s a quiet and calm little village consisting of a few long parallel streets with charming well-kept stone houses. At the square to the south is the town hall and a small bistro, La Tour. At the other end of the village is the church at another small square, and nearby another restaurant, Palais Larcaris. They serve nice local specialties and if you are lucky you may get a table on their veranda with spectacular views across the sea towards Italy.

The Castellar baker is a local celebrity and his bread is sold down in Menton on the market at Careï. A cheesemaker has her little shop just east of the main square. At the northern end of the village there is a large house for olive oil production next to some kind of monument consisting of an oil press. The opening hours to buy these various delicacies are quite limited but if you visit Castellar on a Thursday morning you may be lucky to find a local market on the main square.

Like so many other villages and small towns in the neighborhood, Castellar has a long history. The original village was situated to the north by the foot of the mountain Ormea. There you can still find the remains and ruins of Old Castellar. Evidently, there are traces of neolithic settlements from 12,000 years before Christ. The name of Castellar was first mentioned in the thirteenth century, when a fortress was built on the road from Sospel to Italy.

The name Lascaris is seen here and there. Apparently, Castellar was in early times controlled by the family Lascaris of Ventimiglia for a long period. A more recent historical memory is found north of the village where there is a street named after ”The First Special Service Force” which was the American unit that in 1944 liberated Castellar from fascist occupation.

We often visit Castellar. Sometimes we take the approximately 1 hour long walk, just to visit the village. Sometimes we pass Castellar on a longer hike in the mountains above Menton. It’s always nice to come there.

Castellar is a hub for many wonderful mountain trails. GR52 between Menton and Geneva passes just east of the village, GR 51 ”The Balcony of Côte d’Azur”, between Menton and Marseille, passes the village and the trails from Sospel over Mont Razet likewise. If you want to climb the Point de la Penna, if you walk to Saint Agnes via Monti or if you choose to cross Plan du Lion on the way over Monte Carpano to Italy, you pass Castellar on your way from Menton. Many times we take the opportunity to stop in Castellar for a long lunch or just a short refreshment.
