… och värre brand idag! / … and More Fire Today!

Häromdagen skrev jag om den dramatiska branden i bergen ovanför Menton. Då anade jag inte att det skulle bli ännu värre idag. Det brinner ”som Sören” alldeles ovanför motorvägen, som min vän Elisabeth uttrycker det.

Elden är fortfarande inte under kontroll såvitt jag kan se. Enligt Nice Matin är det nio flygplan, varav fyra Canadair (vattenbombare), och tre helikoptrar som bekämpar elden. Vi följer utvecklingen nerifrån stan och ser nu hur flygplanen passerar på låg höjd över våra huvuden. Fyra villor uppe i bergen lär hittills vara evakuerade och tretton ytterligare är just nu hotade. Vi har sett hur helikoptrar släpper av drabbade människor nere på idrottsplanen vid stranden i Garavan.

Branden startade högt upp i Fossan-dalen och spred sig snabbt med våldsam rökutveckling uppåt och västerut mot Castellar, som dock klarat sig. Det har tidvis varit alldeles mörkt, trots solskenet, på grund av den tjocka brandröken. Här nere i stan är det en konstigt lugn känsla. Alla tittar chockade upp mot bergen, röken och eldslågorna. Själva är vi mycket tacksamma över att vi inte just idag är ute och vandrar i bergen, som vi så ofta är. Igår var vi däremot ute i många timmar på stigarna alldeles i närheten av det eldhärjade området. Det var kanske inte det mest omdömesgilla beslutet så här i torkan och värmen. Vi har fått en tankeställare och kommer nog att välja mindre riskabla vandringsleder just nu.

Two days ago I wrote about the dramatic fire in the hills above Menton. I had no idea that it would be even worse today. Right now there is a big fire going on just above the highway.

The fire is still not under control, as far as I can see. According to Nice Matin, nine airplanes, including four Canadair (water bombers), plus three helicopters, are fighting the fire. We follow the drama from downtown and watch right now how the aircrafts pass low over our heads. Four villas in the hills are evidently evacuated so far, and thirteen more are threatened. We have seen how the helicopters drop of people down on the sports field at the beach of Garavan.

The fire started high up in Fossan Valley and spread quickly with thick smoke upwards and westwards towards Castellar, which luckily survived. It has at times been quite dark, despite the sunshine, because of the thick smoke from the fires. Downtown Menton, it is a strangely calm feeling. Everyone looks in shock towards the mountains, the smoke and the flames. Ourselves, we are very grateful that we are not today’re hiking in the mountains, as we so often are. Yesterday we were on the other hand for many hours on the trails in the immediate vicinity of the fire-ravaged area. It was perhaps not the most wise decision to take in the drought and heat. We have learned a lesson and will probably choose less risky trails at the time beeing.
