Kanske Rivierans bästa glass? Maybe the Best Ice Cream on Côte d’Azur?

Ice cream lovers will find their heaven on Côte d’Azur with all the tempting ice cream parlors, glaciers, everywhere. The English text continues below after the Swedish version…

Glassälskare hamnar i sjunde himlen här på Rivieran med alla frestande glassbarer, glaciers, överallt. Jag antar att det är den italienska matkulturen som har bidragit med alla delikata sorbetliknande sorter i så många fantastiska smaker.

Det passar ju väldigt bra i det här klimatet att svalka sig med en glass ibland. Det kan vara svårt att välja. Vill du njuta av mättad choklad, söt romrussin, krämig karamell eller kanske amarettodoftande tiramisu? Är du sugen på exotisk mango, syrlig citron, frisk passionsfrukt eller möjligen aromatisk kokos? Du kanske föredrar glass som smakar mynta, pistagenöt, jordgubb eller helt enkelt riktig vanilj? Själv har jag bitterljuv grapefruktsorbet som favorit men den är inte alltid lätt att hitta.

Speciellt under sommarhalvåret kryllar det av glassbarer här på Rivieran. De går att hitta även vintertid, och det är ju trevligt med tanke på att en solig januaridag här nere faktiskt är rätt lik vår nordiska försommar. Här är det glassväder året runt, med andra ord.

Jag och mina vänner har hunnit prova oss igenom en stor del av glass-utbudet här i Menton och vi har korat en favorit – Glacier Sofia, ibland också kallad Gelateria Sofia, på 9 quai Bonaparte nära place du Cap i östra änden av gågatan rue Saint Michel. Här är ofta kö framför butiken men det lönar sig att ha tålamod. Glassen är fantastiskt god och det finns mängder av olika smaker att välja bland. Ja, jag vet att det finns större och mer välkända glassbarer i till exempel Nice, men Gelateria Sofia står sig väl i konkurrensen.

Välj ut ett par kulor, be att få dem i en bägare så hinner du äta glassen i lugn och ro innan den rinner ner på dina händer och sätt dig ute under träden i den lilla parken jardin du Campanin som ligger alldeles intill. Eller, ta med dig din glass över gatan ner till hamnen så att du kan strosa runt och titta på båtarna medan du slickar i dig det goda kalla.

Om du någon gång ska unna dig glass så gör det här på Rivieran, och om du befinner dig i Menton så gå till Glacier Sofia.

I guess that we can thank the Italian culture for much of the delicious ice cream and sorbet in all kinds of flavors. The climate really calls for ice cream. The problem is that you sometimes have a hard time to choose. Do you long for rich chocolate, sweet rum & raisin, tart caramel or perhaps amaretto tiramisu? Are you in a mood for exotic mango, sour lemon, fresh passion fruit or possibly aromatic coconut? Maybe you prefer ice cream that tastes of mint, pistachio, strawberry or plain genuine vanilla? My personal favorit is the bittersweet grapefruit sorbet, but that can sometimes be hard to find.

Particularly during sumer, the streets on Côte d’Azur are filled with ice cream parlors. You can find them also during the winter season, which is very nice considering the fact that a sunny day in January in this part of Europe feels abut the same as early summer in Scandinavia. In other words, on Côte d’Azur the ice cream season lasts all year around.

Me and my friends have had the opportunity to explore many of the glaciers in Menton and we have found our favorite – Glacier Sofia, also called Gelateria Sofia, on 9 quai Bonaparte close to place du Cap at the east end of rue Saint Michel. The line could be long but it is worth while to be patient. The ice cream is great and there are very many flavors to choose from. Yes, I know that there are bigger and more famous ice cream parlors to be found in for example Nice, but Gelateria Sofia stands up well against the competition.

Pick a couple of flavors, choose a cup and not a wafer cone to be able to enjoy it all before it melts away down your hands and take a seat under the trees in the small park Jardin du Campanin close by. Or bring your ice cream across the street down to the harbor for a stroll among the boats while you enjoy your chilled goodies.

If you ever think of treating yourself with ice cream, do it on Côte d’Azur, and if you happen to be in Menton, go to Glacier Sofia.
