Taverna Il Cippo – återigen / once again

We have written about Taverna Il Cippo in Mortola Superiore many times already, see eg Elisabeth’s post from December.  It is obvious that this is one of our favorite restaurants. The English text continues below after the Swedish version…

Vi har ju skrivit om Taverna Il Cippo i Mortola Superiore flera gånger tidigare, se senast Elisabeths inlägg från december. Ja, ni förstår ju att det är en favoritrestaurang. Idag fick till slut även jag tillfälle att ta mig dit upp med några goda vänner, för första gången sedan Cinzia tagit över som krögare. Det blev en toppenlunch och jag vill gärna berätta så att fler hittar upp till hennes trevliga taverna.

Det finns flera sätt att ta sig upp till Mortola Superiore. Ibland väljer vi att vandra den långa vägen över bergen men det enklaste är att promenera längs vägen från Menton eller ta bilen. Passera in i Italien vid den övre gränsstationen, fortsätt mot Ventimiglia och tag av upp mot vänster vid vägskylten som anger Mortola Superiore 2,5 km. Fortsätt uppåt längs vägen som så småningom passerar högt över motorvägen, håll vänster i de båda vägskälen så kommer ni snart fram till torget i Mortola Superiore. Il Cippo ligger bakom kyrkan. Avståndet från gränsstationen upp till tavernan är ca 3,5 km.

Cinzia har fräschat upp sin matsal och det är nu ännu trevligare än förut. Fortfarande får man en känsla av mysig alphydda när man kommer in i tavernan men det är öppnare och luftigare än sist vi var där. Maten känner vi igen från förr men det är nog faktiskt ännu godare nu.

Vi fick som vanligt ett antal antipasto, bland annat storfavoriterna kikärtsbollar och råbiff på kalv. Underbart! Som alltid var det svårt att välja pasta men det blev ravioli med salviasmör, också ljuvligt gott. Som kötträtt blev det litet smakbitar av både kanin och vildsvin, inte illa. Sist njöt vi av några olika desserter som tiramisu, amarettoglass och creme brulée. Till kaffet fick vi smaka av Cinzias pappas special – hemgjord likör på myrten, intressant.

Nästan vimmelkantiga av all god mat strosade vi tillbaka ner till Menton. Faktum är att vägen är ännu vackrare neråt med en hisnande utsikt över Medelhavet, Ventimiglia och Menton när man vandrar (eller åker) på den branta åsen mellan kusten och motorvägen.

Ni som ännu inte har besökt Taverna Il Cippo i Mortola Superiore, gör det! Det är väl värt omvägen.

Today, at last, I had the opportunity to visit Il Cippo togeter with friends, for the first time since Cinzia took over the business. We had a great lunch and I really want to spread the message so that more of you can find your way up to her nice taverna.

There are many options to go to Mortola Superiore. Sometimes we choose the long hiking trail over the mountains but the easiest way is to walk along the road from Menton or drive your car. Enter Italy by the upper border, continue towards Ventimiglia and turn left by the sign Mortola Superiore 2.5 km. Continue up along the road that after a while passes high above the highway, keep left in the two crossroads and end up on the little square in Mortola Superiore. You find Il Cippo behind the church. The distance from the border to the taverna is appr 3.5 km.

Cinzia has renovated her restaurant and it is at least as pleasant as before. I still get a feeling of entering a cosy alpine refuge, but it is lighter and airier than last time I came. The menu is similar to before but the food is actually even better.

As usual, we had a number of antipastos, including our favorites fried chick pee buns and tartar on veal. Wonderful! It was hard to choose pasta but we settled for ravioli with sage butter, also delicious. For carne we had tastes of both the rabbit and the wild boar, not bad. As dessert we enjoyed tiramisu, amaretto icecream and creme brulée. The avec to our coffée was Cinzia’s father’s special – homemade liqueur on myrtle, interesting.

Almost dizzy from all the good food we strolled down back to Menton. The truth is that the road is even more beautiful walking (or driving) back downhill with its breathtaing view over the Mediterranean, Ventimiglia and Menton from the ridge between the sea and the highway.

All of you who have still not visited Taverna Il Cippo in Mortola Superiore, do it! It is definitely worth the detour.
