”20000 lieues sous les Mers”, eller på svenska, ”En världsomsegling under havet”, (Jules Verne) är namnet på årets Citronfestival som gick av stapeln förra lördagen den 15 februari. Detta tema tycker jag passar bra mycket bättre här nere i Menton än julens tema  som var ”New York, New York”. Därmed inget ont om det Stora Äpplet…men det blir lite rörigt här nere då vi mest tänker på citroner och apelsiner.

Under årets Citronfestival tittar ner under havet…(enligt Wikipedia på franska betyder lieue, pluralis lieues, fritt översatt: Ordet lieue i Jules Vernes roman är ett längdmått, som motsvarar fyra kilometer. Alltså anges längd och inte djup. Resans total längd skulle då vara åtti tusen kilometer.)

Festivalen började försiktigt under småregn på lördagen. Alla fina jätteskulpturer gjorda av citroner och apelsiner var på plats, så även en hel del paraplyförsedda besökare! Årets festival lär ha varit en prövning för skulptörerna under uppbyggnaden eftersom regnet inte upphört mycket de senaste veckorna. IMG_6068Jag passade på att vara inomhus på Palais de l´Europe för att besöka Orchidée utställningen, som också återkommer varje år. Här ser man inte bara orchidéer utan kan också inhandla diverse produkter framställda i och kring Menton…allt från söta ljusstakar till vackra siden-scarves och förstås honung, likör och tvål!IMG_6061IMG_6059

Söndagen började med strålande sol och blå himmel! Äntligen! Det var varmt och skönt vilket lovade gott för årets först karnevalståg. Som vanligt ville vi förena nytta med nöje. Jag menar en god lunch samtidigt som vi skulle avnjuta karnevalståget som skulle löpa  längs strandpromenaden. Vi löste biljett till karnevalsområdet och gick till en restaurang vi besökt en gång tidigare, La Vita e Bella. Här bedyrar man att all mat är hemlagad…men inte deras pommes frites dock. Trots ett stort tryck på restaurangen höll maten måttet och personalen var jättetrevlig. Klockan var tolv och vi fick ett bord på första parkett precis där första karnevalsvagnen stod klar för avfärd. Himlen mulnade på och det kom ett par små droppar regn…men när väl tåget satte igång var det behaglig temperatur om än ingen sol. IMG_6085IMG_6092IMG_6067Klockan fyra hade paraden hunnit två varv och man kunde ana att deltagarna var lite matta…Nu får de ta igen sig några dagar innan det är dags igen. Vi fick lugnt sitta på vår första parkett i i fyra timmar med god mat och med trevliga pratstunder med bordsgrannar som kom och gick och framför allt en fantastisk karneval med alla sorters sinnrika, innovativa karnevalsekipage…säkert hade Jules Verne ett finger med i spelet! Jag hoppas att vädret har förbättrat sig sedan förra helgen!

“20000 leagues sous les Mers” , or in English, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” ( Jules Verne ) is the name of this year’s Lemon Festival which started on Saturday, February 15. This theme, I think, fits a lot better down here in Menton than the Christmas theme which was New York, New York.  Thus, nothing bad was said of the ”Big Apple” … but it gets a bit confusing down here when we mostly think of lemons and oranges.
This years Lemon Festival is looking down under the sea… (according to Wikipedia in French the word “leagues” is freely translated: The word “league” in Jules Verne’s novel is a measure of length, which corresponds to four kilometers. Thus “leagues” specified length and not depth. The journey’s length would then be eighty thousand kilometers.)
The festival began slowly last misty Saturday. All beautiful giant sculptures made from lemons and oranges were in place, as well as a lot of visitors with umbrellas! This year’s festival is said to have been quite an ordeal for the sculptors during the build-up since the rain has barely ceased in recent weeks.
I took the opportunity to be indoors at the “Palais de l’Europe” to visit the Orchid exhibition, which also recurs every year. Here you can see not only orchids but can also purchase various products made in and around Menton … everything from cute candle holders to beautiful silk scarves and of course honey, liqueurs, and soap!
Sunday started with bright sunshine and blue skies! Finally! It was nice and warm which boded well for the year’s first carnival. As usual, we wanted to combine business with pleasure. I mean a good lunch while we were enjoying the carnival procession which would proceed along the beach promenade. We bought a ticket to the carnival area and went to a restaurant we visited once before, La Vita e Bella. Here they claim that all the food is homemade … but not their fries. Despite a big rush at the restaurant, the food was good and the staff was really nice. It was noon and we got a table in the front row right where the first carnival carriage was ready for departure. The sky clouded over and a few small drops of rain fell… but once the parade started, it was a comfortable temperature despite the lack of sun.
At four o’clock the parade had gone around twice and you could sense that participants were a little worn … Now they have time to rest up a few days before it’s time again. We were able to sit on our front row for four hours, with good food and nice chats with table neighbors who came and went, and above all in front of a fantastic carnival with all sorts of ingenious, innovative carnival carriages … surely Jules Verne had some say in this!
