Två Brocanter i Menton – Two Brocantes in Menton

”Brocante” in French corresponds to English flea market or second hand, places that sell antiques & curiosities of varying age, quality and type. The English version continues below after the Swedish text…

Antikt? Ja, ibland kan det nog vara det. Kuriöst? Ja, ofta! Fantastiskt roligt är det hur som helst att botanisera i dessa brocanter och kanske göra ett och annat fynd av något som plötsligt och överraskande känns alldeles oumbärligt.  Två kul och innehållsrika brocanter I Menton är Robert på Rue du Général Gallieni nedanför gamla stan och Brocante Mentonnais på Rue Victor Hugo nära den stora järnvägsstationen.

Den första, Robert, är en fullsmockad lagerlokal som man nästan kan gå vilse i. Det finns möbler och prylar överallt i flera rum och på flera utspridda plan. De litet ”finare ” och dyrare sakerna finns i ett första rum med fönster ut mot gatan, resten trängs längre in i lokalen som slutar i en innergård. En pratsam papegoja i en bur kan plötsligt tjuta ”bonjour” och inleder gärna en dialog med dig. Bli inte förvånad om du börjar nysa efter ett tag, det är ganska dammigt. Den som är road kan lätt tillbringa lång tid bland alla prylar och ändå missa ganska mycket. Den som inte är road tröttnar snabbt, har jag märkt….

Brocante Mentonnaise däremot, är en prydlig och välorganiserad butik med två lokaler mitt emot varandra på Rue Victor Hugo. Har du tur är det också öppet ut till innergården och lagerutrymmet bakom. En mycket sympatisk familj driver stället. Sonen verkar vara chef, hans späda mamma sköter ofta butiken och pappan sköter transporter. De är verkligen hjälpsamma och pappan har vid flera tillfällen kört hem både våra skrymmande inköp och oss själva i sin lilla lastbil, utan extra ersättning. Det är klart att det kanske säger en del om prisnivån och marginalerna, att de kan kosta på sig den servicen och också att ge en hel del rabatt till stamkunder, men trevligt är det hur som helst.

Vi har märkt under de senaste åren att brocanterna tycks fylla på sina lager med mer än vad de lyckas avyttra. Det blir trängre och trängre. Förmodligen är det en effekt av litet sämre tider. Vi har inte märkt att det påverkat priserna ännu, men det kanske kommer? Speciellt litet större skrymmande möbler verkar svårsålda.

Brocanterna på Rivieran erbjuder generellt inte speciellt låga priser. Åh andra sidan så är inte mycket annat särskilt billigt heller här nere, särskilt inte möbler, och de vanliga möbelaffärerna runt Menton är sorgligt tråkiga. Vi har därför inrett med en hel del gamla charmiga möbler från brocanterna och tycker att det ger en härlig (inbillat?) traditionell sydfransk touch åt vårt hem. Dessutom går det att hitta en massa roliga småprylar, både nyttiga och onyttiga, om man letar litet grand. Synd att inte vår bostad här nere är större, nu får det dessvärre inte plats så mycket mer…

Antique? Yes sometimes, I assume. Curious?  Quite often! Anyway, it is great fun to search out these brocantes and perhaps make a good bargain on some item that suddenly and surprisingly turns out to be absolutely indispensable. Two enjoyable brocantes in Menton are Robert on Rue du Général Gallieni just on the edge of the old town and Brocante Mentonnais on Rue Victor Hugo close to the main railway station.

The first one, Robert, is an overloaded warehouse where you can almost get lost among all the furniture and stuff in several rooms on many scattered floors. The items of “supreme quality” (and price) are found in the room just by the street, the rest is crowded further in. Suddenly, a talkative parrot in a cage may scream “bonjour” in an attempt to open a dialogue. Do not be surprised if you start to sneeze after a while, the shop is filled with dust. Those of you who enjoy places like this can easily spend hours among all the “antiques” and still only discover a limited part. If you lack the passion, you will easily get bored I have noticed….

Brocante Mentonnaise, on the other hand, is a neat and well organized shop with two separate premises on opposite sides of Rue Victor Hugo. If you are lucky, you can also access the yard behind the shop and the extra storage room. The place is run by a pleasant family. It seems like the son is in charge, the mother usually works in the shop and the father runs their truck. They are all really service minded and on a few occasions the father has transported both ourselves and our big-sized purchase home in his truck, free of charge. It may tell you something about their price levels and margins, that they can offer this kind of service together with reasonable discounts for loyal customers, but it is nevertheless very nice.

During the past years we have noticed that the brocantes seem to fill their stocks with more items than they are able to resell. They become more and more crowded. I guess this is an effect of the weaker economy. So far we can’t see that this has affected the prices, but maybe that will come as well? Especially big and voluminous furniture seem to be difficult to divest.

The brocantes on Cote d’Azur do not offer very low prices. However, price levels in general are not low here, especially not on furniture, and the ordinary furniture stores around Menton are depressingly uninspiring. Concequently, we have furnished our home with quite a lot of old charming things from the brocantes and are happy with the (imaginary?) feeling of traditional southern France that this creates. In addition, you can always find a lot of nice odd household items, usable or just for fun. It is a pity that our home in Menton is not bigger, sadly we can’t squeeze in more things any longer…
