Menton & Rugby

Vad i hela friden har Menton och Rugby gemensamt? Svaret är William Webb Ellis, rugbysportens fader. Han ligger begravd i Menton på gamla kyrkogården ”le cimetière du vieux château”. En av stadens mer oväntade sevärdheter!

What on earth can Menton and Rugby have in common? The answer is William Webb Ellis, the inventor of the sport rugby. His is buried in Menton in ”le cimetière du vieux château”. One of the more unexpected attractions of our town!

Webb Ellis föddes 1806 i England och var elev vid Rugby School mellan 1816 och 1825. Han sägs ha varit en duktig student och cricketspelare, även om det noterades att han hade ”tendenser att fuska i cricket”. Sporten rugby härstammar från det tillfälle då Webb Ellis under en fotbollsmatch påstås ha tagit bollen i famnen (vilket var tillåtet) och sprungit framåt med den (inte tillåtet). Den här incidenten ska ha inträffat under senare delen av 1823. Webb Ellis blev så småningom präst, förblev ogift och pensionerade sig sedermera i soliga och varma Menton där han dog 1872. Om han någonsin spelade något som liknade rugby i Menton förtäljer inte historien…

Webb Ellis was born 1806 in England and was a pupil at Rugby School from 1816 to 1825. He was recorded as being a good scholar and cricketer, although it was noted that he was “rather inclined to take unfair advantage at cricket”. The invention of the sport rugby refers to the incident in which Webb Ellis supposedly caught the ball in his arms during a football match (which was allowed) and ran forward with it (which was not). This was said to have happened in the latter half of 1823. Webb Ellis eventually became a clergyman, stayed unmarried and later on retired in sunny and warm Menton where he died in 1872. If he ever played anything similar to rugby in Menton, I do not know…

Om sanningen ska fram, så uppstod inte historien om hur Webb Ellis uppfann sporten rugby förrän fyra år efter hans död. Tvivel har uttryckts ända sedan 1895 då historien undersöktes närmare för första gången av the Old Rugbeian Society. Den utredningen kom till slutsatsen att det var ”omöjligt att hitta ögonvittnen till händelsen”. Hur som helst, legenden verkar vara accepterad och år 1987 bestämde sig internationella rugbyförbundet för att uppkalla sportens segertrofé efter William Webb Ellis.

To tell the truth, the claim that Webb Ellis invented the game did not surface until four years after his death. Doubts have been raised about the story since 1895, when it was first investigated by the Old Rugbeian Society. The committee conducting the investigation was ”unable to procure any first hand evidence of the occurrence”. Anyway, the legend seems to be accepted and in 1987 the International Rugby Board decided to name its main trophy after William Webb Ellis.

Menton ser uppenbarligen med stolthet på banden till rugby och till William Webb Ellis personligen. Den lokala rugbyklubben är uppkallad efter honom och en staty av Ellis med en rugbyboll står vid en av de mindre grindarna till gamla kyrkogården. Statyn restes 2007 i samband med att Frankrike var värd för Rugby World Cup. Webb Ellis grav är numera ganska välskött och lätt att hitta på en av de lägre nivåerna på denna vackra begravningsplats nordvästra sida.

Menton is obviously proud of its connection to the rugby sport and to William Webb Ellis himself. The local rugby club is named after him and a statue of a rugby-playing Ellis can be found at one of the side entrances to the old cemetery. The statue was unveiled in 2007 when France hosted the Rugby World Cup. Webb Ellis’ grave is since then rather well kept and easy to find on one of the lower levels in the northwest part of this beautiful cemetery.
